Trout mania with a 6 and 3 year old (triple hookup)

Well, this afternoon was an epic, memorable outing on the boat in Yakima county with my kids. First I must say that I have two great fishermen in training under my wing. They surprise me every time I take them out with their willingness to learn and get their hands dirty. This is their story of this afternoon.

It was 8 a.m. and Alejandro, my 3 year old son already had that fishin’ itch he needed to stratch. I told him I would take him and Alexa (6 year old) out after school. After we dropped Alexa off at school Alejandro and I went down to Bimart to replace his rod that I had broken a couple of weeks earlier. He picked out a nice 5’6” red Berkeley rod that seemed cool to him. We picked up some worms and headed home to attach his reel to his new rod. We readied the boat and went for his sister at about 12 noon. The day started out beautiful, it was calm and warm. As soon as we hit the lake the weather turned overcast and breezy but remained warm. We set out with thoughts and hopes of fish in the hold. Alexa had tied on a small original floating rapala, Alejandro a red/green with chartreuse blade wedding ring and I with a silver/blue cast master. We trolled from north to south with Alexa’s rig on the right, Alejandro on the left and mine in the middle. For 15 minutes the wind rocked the boat and made steering a bit of a challenge. We saw some bank fishermen on the southwest bank and started our turn east about 40 feet from the shore. We made our turn and headed east and about 3 minutes later Alexa’s rod danced wildly with the unmistakable shake of a fish. She quickly pulled her rod out of the holder and set the hook. As she started her fight I looked over in time to see Alejandro’s rod snap back and forth uncontrollably. At this point I have both kids hooked up and fighting a couple trout. I’m doing my best to keep them from wrapping each other up and wouldn’t you know it...my rod goes ape as well. All mayhem breaks loose, we have three hookups all in a matter of a minute! Now I am trying to keep all three lines from tangling, keeping the boat straight in the wind all while trying to coach the kids and getting my fish in as well. The wind was brutal, it was challenging, to say the least, to keep everything on track. Finally, Alexa boats her fish and I get mine. Alejandro likes to play his fish so he still had his on about 10 feet away from the boat. As the fish gets close it pops off and swims away. All of this action went down in about 3 minutes. It was epic. We have had many doubles but this was our first triple hookup. At first I was a little bummed that my little boy lost his fish but as we continued our troll the excitement in my kid’s voice was overwhelming. They were so amped and laughing in disbelief at our incredible moment together. It was one of those moments that will live forever in their memories. I normally record them hooking up and reeling their fish in but this happened so suddenly and passed so quickly that I had no free hands to pull out the phone. Oh well, memories get better with time and I’m sure this one will remain one of our favorites all time.

Those are some of the best memories (and some of the worst, LOL) when they are young and eager to learn.

The best part is big sis holding up the stop sign for him to stay up on the bank when he was getting ready to go down...  She was letting him know, you keep reeling and I'll get it on shore..  I love it.
