22-250 action / build
« on: April 02, 2018, 04:11:30 AM »
So I have a Savage 22-250 with heavy barrel.  If I decided to build on this action what would be a good round to look at?  Also would you re barrel or just have the barrel reworked to the new cartridge?  I have a lot of metal to work with on the current barrel.....just have never built a rifle before so don't know what is best.  I do know new barrels are not the expensive in the whole scheme of things so may be easier to just buy.  It is a model 12 heavy barrel.

Thanks for any input.

You could go 243, 7-08,.308, 338fedral ect basicly and thing that will work with your shell holder in short action will work with your bolt face. Pretty simple with savage. As for taking in the old barrel I can't answer that, depends on the condition of the rifling ect.

I have done quit a few Savage barrel changes. You can just about do any short action cartridge on the Savage 12 . Even change the bolt face and magazine and go down to .223 if you want.
Go to this sight and you will find a lot of info.

The 338 federal is awfully interesting to me.  Big bullet at 2600 ish fps would make good bear medicine.

Depending on the condition of the barrel, it along with any other parts that you swap out can usually find a home with someone else doing the same thing.

The last couple of Cabela's sales on the 12FV, had alot of guys doing just that.  Of course new take-offs carry a preminum, but still lots of good, used barrels sell as well.

Much like AR's, with a few basic gunsmithing tools, Savages are very home bulider friendly.

Whatever you decide caliber wise I would say just get a new barrel. Pre fits aren’t all that expensive.
Lots of options for short action rounds

I just put it in there for s and giggles.. They are reading the forum where it's the same item. Sometimes people don't look in the classifieds.
