Week 2 Hunt
« on: October 21, 2007, 11:41:46 AM »
After last weekends great opener hunt we had, me, my cousin and a friend decided to head out Saturday morning to see what we could come up with. We scouted a few places we wanted to go, but none of them looked good. So we settled for Fobes Hill area below Bickford Ave in Snohomish. Anyone that's hunted there knows it can be really hit or miss. I've limited on certain days, and been skunked on others.Got out early, and started the walk down the dike. We got passed up walkin the dike by a couple guys who were huffin' it double time. They were obviously on the same mission as us, because they setup in the spot we wanted to go. Plan B ended up being some open water, in a blind that my cousin and our friend had found washed up in the floods last year. We drug it out into a corner, set a couple dozen dekes and settled in at about 530 to wait for opening. Sure enough, we had two sets of hunters setup on either side of us. We made sure to watch their lights to get an idea of where they were in relation to our shooting lanes and our spread. Opening approached and birds started working our spread. Next thing we know the second set of guys skybust a group of pins right at opening, and we see that they are no more than 100 yds directly in front of us, right in our shooting lane and the landing zone we left open for ducks. Okay, so maybe these guys are a little antsy. But who sets up that close, with 4 goose floaters, and works someone elses spread? Apparently these guys do. The day continues and we had some promising looks from several groups, but everytime they'd swing over the other two groups, they'd unload and miss 95% of the time. Talk about frustrating! We ended up scratching down 6 birds. 3 pins, 2 teal, and a wigeon. Overall, not a horrible day. I shot okay, could have done better though. I might give it a shot down there the middle of this week since i have wednesday off. Hope everyone else had a good second week.

It sure is a zoo over here. I guess a ton of people and skybusters are the norm though. I have run into quite a few already this season. Glad you scratched out 6 at least, better then I did.

Yeah, we were laughin about it at the end of the day. I'd say we probably would have had 12 or more in the bag if they hadn't spooked off birds working our spread. I know a guy can't learn to call in a day either, but these guys were horrible. We even called back a few times the way they were calling so maybe they'd get the idea of how horrible they were. The two that were right in front of us actually dropped a bird that was working our spread, and they had one hell of a time finding it. I was just happy to not get skunked, and to get some cold fresh air in my lungs. My fingertips haven't been that numb in awhile.  :chuckle:

I have had people set up camp damn near in my lap before.
We did ok sat and sunday with out the duck sled.  We managed 5 geese and a big bag of mixed ducks in the two mornings.  Birds were showing up in big numbers on saturday but Sunday was a different story.  Pretty slow.  No bands yet either.

Went back to the same area yesterday, me and my partner were the only ones there. Didn't have any pressure to move the birds around, and there was no wind to speak of so it was pretty slow. I was pretty proud of my calling though. Called some ducks in that were commited to bigger water where ducks were rafting, got them worked in nice and close. If only our shooting had been a little better. We managed to get 5 out of the few groups we saw. Overall a great way to spend my day off.

NO! Shooting was kind crappy on my part. Haha, but i'm always super critical. I didn't go out this morning, yesterday it was not foggy at all. I'll ask my buddy who went out today, i'll post up how they did.
