What's in your elk pack part 5 – Emergency Gear
« on: June 22, 2018, 08:41:52 AM »
Let’s roll with part 5 of this super awesome series of threads on “what’s in your elk pack”. What do you cats have in your elk pack for emergency gear (talking first aid items)? For the purpose of these threads, let’s assume we’re talking about pack in hunts.

To date, we’ve covered kill kit, sleep system, sustenance (food and drink), and optics/electronics/navigation.

If memory serves, I normally carry the following:  Large/small bandages, white tape, quick clot, suture kit, antiseptic wipes, ibuprofen and a few “strong” pain pills, pitch sticks/bic lighter, and lightweight emergency blanket.

Well, what's in your elk pack for emergency gear?

Basically, my theory is to have a couple over the counter meds for general comfort/sickness, the ability to stop the bleeding, and the ability to call for help.  Threw in an EPI pen just in case I come across someone who needs it.

- antiseptic wipes
- a few various band-aids
- neosporin
- coban wrap
- athletic tape
- epi pen
- NSAIDS
- anti-diarrhea meds
- antihistamine
- space blanket
- surgical pads
- various gauze pads
- lighter
- paracord
- There has to be something else I'm forgetting....

- SPOT emergency locator beacon.
"master" hunter - still a noob.

Pretty similar, but I now have a few benedryl pills and I use combat gauze rather than quikclot.  Quikclot's effectiveness is hard to keep with any kind of breeze, and can actually become hazardous to eyesight.  I also carry a CAT.  Overall I think I'm into my emergency gear for about 22oz if I recall correctly.

I pack the Adventure Medical & Survival Kit (the orange bag in the REI survival section).  Which is probably far more than I need, as that thing has darn near everything for medical and survival (ie mirror, compass, etc.).  I augment it with extra meds, quick clot, and Benadryl.  And I count my DeLorme Explorer as part of my emergency gear.  And I pay the annual SAR insurance subscription for it, so taxpayers don't have to fund the SAR bill to come get my butt out.
