Issues with travel trailer water freezing in MT in Nov??
« on: September 03, 2018, 09:05:55 PM »
We are headed to eastern MT deer hunting the third week of November, should I be concerned about the fresh water tank/lines freezing in my trailer (2014 Salem Cruise lite 18’) ?? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I’d be prepared for temperatures down to -20 farenheight.

Take a look at some past weather logs. It’s no joke.

Yep.  Run it dry that time of year in MT.

I'll be there and I am leaving the trailer home
Getting a motel, too many MT passes and too cold

Oh I'd 100% use the chitter. Bring a couple three gallons of windshield washer fluid to flush with or dilute the black tank water.
Presume you don't have heated tanks/lines.
Look at the temperatures where your headed and decide whether you can find a way to keep tanks warm.  (Not likely though unless your running heat 24/7 if it's below about 20deg).
Pack some water jugs. Unless it's well below zero if the jugs are at room temp in the camper at night, leaving them for the day with no heat won't freeze them up.

I bring water jugs in the winter. Just use those to fill the toilet. I cover them with blankets inside the camper when I’m hunting during the day & haven’t had any freeze.

Bought an airstream a while back and one of the things I really like is the heated water system. They designed the system for winter use and it works great. I'm sure other brands have that system and I'd sure look for one if you're going to be doing late fall/winter camping. Works off either the propane or electric system.

Thanks for all of the input everyone. I plan to watch the forecast for our area the week before. I was planning on bringing a bunch of the 2.5 gal jugs anyway. I was thinking I could add some rv antifreeze to the black tank and not fill the fresh tank. I don’t care if the black water tank freezes because we won’t need to dump it, I just don’t want to crack a line on it. If that happened, I think I would just empty it out and toss a match in it.

we had one trip to MT over halloween one year where everything froze up.  We had to keep the food and water inside the tent trailer and the heater on high just to keep things from freezing up.
