.410 TSS and turkeys
« on: October 07, 2018, 07:51:02 AM »
Just a quick note about .410's and TSS ammo. I just returned from a hunt in Washington state where we killed 4 turkeys with my little Winchester 42 using Federal TSS ammo. I shot a tom and a hen, and my 2 brothers each shot birds...a jake and a hen. In all cases the birds went right down. The longest shot was just under 40 yards, the other shots ranged from 20-30 yards.
Bottom line...Yes, a .410 loaded with TSS shot kills turkeys quite dead!

What size shot and how much is in a load?   I understand it's much more dense, but seems that limits the shot count/density.  Curious as I may want to try my 410 this spring.

Curious on the shot count and how it compares with lead.  Pretty cool if it is a dense enough pattern.

Why?

Is the .410 your only shotgun?  Just proving a point?

Gee, don't rightly know for sure, but it was pretty fun and added a little spice to the hunt.  Prove a point?...nah, maybe validate one.
I learned to shot with a model 42 Winchester as a kid and I own three of them in various configurations. Still love to shoot them, carry them and look at them...great little guns. Now with the advent of TSS shot I can use them to take turkey...my favorite hunting!

That's awesome!  I love .410s and have killed piles of small game and upland birds with mine, but might have to try a turkey now!

Wonder how it'd be in my tc contender?  Pistol or shotgun? Could be prohibited under Prohibited Hunting Methods rule 12?

Lots of guys back east and down south are laying the 12ga down and going to smaller bore shotguns. I did, I’m using a 20ga now with 9 shot TSS. The .410 has now been turned into a 40yard gun with basically no recoil. I will be picking up a .410 as well and get the barrel threaded for chokes. I shoot Apex loads, veteran owned company.
