Eastern Elk??
« on: October 10, 2018, 10:11:38 PM »
New to Bow hunting. Have an over the counter Eastern tag. Got after it in Colockum GMU 328 had few good opportunities but couldn't get it done. Had an amazing time. Wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction for late eastern bow season. Just a general idea of where to go? Any help would be appreciated! I'm totally hooked. Would love to take a cow or spike.

it becomes a weather dependent hunt.  depending on the snow, some areas are great, some arent, and some you cant even get into.
i know that doesn't seem like  any help, but just look at the regs to see whats open, and pack those tire chains.
good luck

Try the Nile or Manastash units. Have had success in the past. Good Luck

Make sure you have some good boots and gaiters, pray for snow, and go have a blast tracking elk through the woods.  I'm a rifle guy, but I'm falling in love with chasing elk through the snow.  I might just have to try archery one day, for the late season alone  :chuckle:

Check harvest reports and game management plans on WDFW's website; it will give you a good general sense of which units hold elk and which don't.  Beyond that, there's nothing we can tell you on here that will be worth anything, other than to just get out there and scout.  If you had a few good opportunities in 328, I would honestly favor hunting in areas that I know over areas that I don't (although I admit I'm not as familiar with the Colokum herd's fall/winter migration patterns).

Good luck!

When I am Christmas tree hunting up the little Naches there is plenty of company and lots of gutpiles along the road.

check the regs before you go.
340 (manastash) isn't open late.

I was told by a wdfw biologist not to waste my time in the Colockum during late. Any truth to that statement?

I would agree with that. Some elk around, but most have moved to a diff unit

From my experiences, and talking with a bio, Yup. But I'm no expert.
After 3 weapon type seasons, migration towards 329, true spike only, private lowlands, finding a legal elk that you can get close to is like a needle in a haystack. IMO

Disclaimer; I am definitely not a critter whisperer like you though Bone.
