Westport Jetty

Going to Try the jetty at Westport. Is there any side, north or south that’s better or you have  to go all the way out. I never done it before just wondering if anybody could share some experience. Is it safe to go alone?

Was recently out for tuna. Speaking with the captain he mentioned they lose someone often on the jetties. The way waves were breaking over the end of it was harsh. Would watch the weather and get in touch with the local tackle shop. be safe.

First time I went we thought it had to be better all the way at the end. It wasn't. We caught a couple legal lings about 1/2 way back, but the guys fishing the north side near the base of the jetty out-fished us easily. Decided to never go all the way out there again. Sealions galore. The rocks out there are very slick with bird ****. Not to mention they're the size of Volkswagens. Felt-soled boots with cleats would be my recommendation, in addition to the pfd.

One more question. Is there a size limit on lingcod? I can’t find it in the regulation pamphlet.

Was a long day. Wound up fishing the south side due to winds managed 5 out of 11

Went back for the closure yesterday. No Pic’s! But I scored two nice Bass two decent Greenling and one Cabazon. The problem I have is getting a good hook set on the Lings. I had a few nice ones on only to have them get off. Problem #2 packing too much weight! Monday I packed a lot by hand. Yesterday I backpacked so I could bring a net. A plus was I wore my Spiky’s which I think saved me from slipping. By next season I hope to have a good system that won’t kill this old man.

The lings can be tough out there, we used to lose a lot on jigs. Their jaws are so dang strong I feel like half the time you’re fighting one they’re not really hooked but just hanging on, then they simply let go and you’re done.

It Was frustrating to say the least, having them spooling line and making me wonder if the old HMG was going to survive sometimes right up to the rocks then gone. Anyway I’m fixin to nail-um next year.

Looks like your getting the hang of it. Keep an eye out for those rogue waves and other strange Sea Creatures.

Thanks Doug, I was using the rig you have with braided line. I suffered many tangled retrieves. But did catch a few small Perch. There was no jousting however the Surfers almost went fisticuffs during the morning darkness. Something about parking and locals only. I also saw a Whale that was within 💯 yards of the surfers. They did not seem to care about it.

Found these on the table today. I’d say it is a sign of something good. Just need to find the right jig head now. I am look at solunar and tide tables for mid March.

I use those Gulp grubs quite a bit, love them except for when you have smaller fish bite them, then they always seem to bite just the tail of the grub off. That white is my favorite, that and the new penny color.

I've had good luck with the Kalin's Ultimate Swim Bait jigheads, the 3/4 oz. jighead has a 5/0 hook and works well at jetties and doesn't sink too fast with the big Gulp grub on it. When I'm on my boat at the jetties I use a slightly heavier jig, like a 1.5oz or 2oz. But those heavier ones aren't as good for shore fishing IMO because they sink faster and are more prone to diving in between rocks and snagging. Can't jig as effectively when they sink so fast. Kalin's also makes the Ultimate Bullet Jig in the same size, they both work well. As well as the Sea Striker got-cha heads, their 1oz jig has a 4/0 hook. I typically get the unpainted to save money, I haven't had any reason to believe the painted ones get any more strikes. If you're fishing with Gulp then it just doesn't matter if the jighead is painted or not, they are biting no matter what!
