Mossberg 835 ulti mag, any good?
« on: November 09, 2018, 12:41:58 PM »
I’m looking at either a benelli nova or 870 and see this mossberg 835 ulti mag at dicks sporting goods for $299. Seems like a decent deal and feels pretty good. Any reason to spend more for the nova or get an 870? The nova felt pretty awesome but I’m looking to spend around $300. It was a 28” 12g and chambered for 3 1/2” and dipped in some kind of camo.

Thanks. What do you normally use it for? I’m trying to get back in to upland game and give duck/ goose a try. Also, might take a crack at turkey too. Seems all around decent.

Mine is an old 24inch camoed turkey model.used mostly for turkey hunting, but it has shot some coyotes, and geese-duck gun.I bought and installed a aluminum tang safety button to replace the plastic one.Read an article years ago the plastic ones were prone to break?

If you're going to buy a pump action shotgun, can't do much better than a Mossberg for the money.

I say buy that sucker!

The peer pressure is helping me. I’m pulling the trigger on it tomorrow. Next up, I’m looking for somewhere to shoot a duck or goose on the west side without getting all the full out gear that I probably need. Is there such a thing as just walking around and shooting a duck/goose? Or are there any reasonable guides on the west side for a half day hunt? I’ve only ever hunted upland game. I’ll search the forum but feel free to spread a little knowledge to an interested waterfowler. I’ve eaten duck and goose plenty of times in Czechia and Germany and I’m love liver and all the other good stuff. Jonesing for some wild birds!

Yep, wait for a windy, stormy day when the Seahawks are playing.  Head out to popular spots about noon and just walk around peeking in ditches and water and keeping an eye out overhead.  It isn't the highest probability, but jump shooting can produce birds.

Now that you have a new shotgun, find a local gun club that has a trap or skeet field. Practice is your friend. Ask for help at the club. Most clubs will welcome new shooters. When you get to the point when you can hit a few birds try calling for birds without mounting the gun first. Best way to practice for hunting. Good luck.

I have a spot that I would do this very same thing. Often my do could chase up cripples folks had lost. One day I got 3 mallards without firing a shot!

Most of my waterfowl hunting is jump shooting. I limit out pretty often on JBLM.
Practical accuracy and a packable rifle.
Blued steel and walnut is always better.

I'm looking for a good mentor so if your interested in taking along a newbie duck hunter let me know. My only buddy who likes hunting has a 6 week old and he’s not brave enough to try to sneak out and hunt.
