Shot in self defense
« on: November 30, 2018, 10:49:20 AM »
This guy was a public land Buck that as the title states was almost shot in self defense.
I was sitting on a knoll watching a little three point milling around at about 80 yards. As I started glassing around I saw this guy in the shadows of a stand of trees according to my range finder he was at 337 yards.  Mind you I am sitting in tall grass that was over waste high.
I had no desire to shoot the three point and was not even sure about this guy because I had seen much bigger bucks in the area.  When all of a sudden a set of ears pop up in front of the three point then another followed by two more. The little guy was standing on top of four does.  Well this guy did not like that idea and literally came racing in to push him off of his babes.  As he did so he was pushing "his girls" right into me.  There was one other little knob at 25 yards from me and one of his girls walked up on to it and he followed her up.
I am up on my knees watching all of this and there he was standing broadside at basically point blank range when he finally realizes that I am there.  He looked at me and just gives me this big loud snort as if saying these are my girls and what are you going to do about it?  Well I had a second or two to think about it because he really wasn't the one I was looking for, but when he gave me that second snort and started pawing at the ground  I informed him exactly what I was going to do about it.  I'm going to let the 3 point have his girls end of conversation.

In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

Love it, great buck! I had a run in with a big non-typical while elk hunting a few years ago. He was coming down the trail that I was going up. He was nose to the ground, almost trotting, obviously trailing a doe. He noticed me when he was about 30 yards away, stopped, grunted and snorted and then layed his ears back like he was ready to fight. I stepped off above the trail about 10' and he continued right on by. One of the most unreal experiences ever.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.
