Coon Calling...
« on: March 19, 2009, 07:48:36 PM »
I have spent the last 11 years calling hundereds of coyotes and a few bobcats but i have always wanted to try calling coons.  I don't mean I want to call for coyotes and bobcats and accidently call a coon, I want to do it intentionally.  Has anyone out there tried calling them in and what kinds of setups are you targeting.  I know that many who call them call around old barns or buildings but the problem is that I don't know to many place with old run down barns.  Plus I would like to know how to call when there is not barn around, maybe in thick timber or creek bottoms.  Any pointers would be great.

Creek bottoms and use a bird in distress call.  I have coon called on purpose several times in Missouri growing up and it is effective, but I have also called in yotes, fox and bobcats when I was trying to call in a coon, so be ready for pretty much anything.

P.S.  Critters Come when called is a good book that has a chapter and photos devoted to coon calling.

If you want to call during the day find some den trees and set up on the opposite side as the hole so they have to come all the way out to see what is going on. If you want to call at night creek bottoms or a food source (corn field, berry patch). We used sounds like coons fighting and coon distress bird distress also works. I did most of my calling in WI haven't tried it here yet.

thanks for the info and yes I knew that the season is over.  What I was wanting to do was study and scout in the offseason so next year when it opens I want to know that what I am doing is not hurting me more than helping.  I know the problems with cold calling an area let alone calling an animal that I don't know much about.  I stay away from just going out and screaming on a call because you can accually hurt the area and I don't want to do that.  My motto with coyotes and bobcats has always been, learn more hunt less, i am sure that applying this will also help with coons.  Thanks again.
