Ruger gunsite scout

Anyone out there have any experience with this gun. Looking for a good little gun for the wife. Nice and lite. 308 caliber. Supposed to accept one of those new scopes where you can look through with both eyes?? Anyone ever heard of that before?

My wife uses one, shes harvested 20 or so deer with it plus coyotes and hogs. Ive shot a few myself with it.

I've heard good things about them. I believe the scope you're talking about is commonly referred to as a scout scope. The rifle weighs 7.5 pounds bare, so I'm not sure I'd call that light. It'll be over 9 pounds loaded with a scope. That's pushing the real heavy line if you ask me.

I have been stalking them for some time now, and I have not yet been able to pull the trigger.  The lightest Ruger Scout is the 16" barrel with polymer stock at about 6 pounds, comparable to the options below.


If you want light, primarily, also check out the Ruger Hawkeye Compact or Hawkeye Compact Laminate or the Remington 700 Mountain Rifles.

I have a 700 Mountain Rifle and an older Ruger Hawkeye All-Weather (don't think they make them anymore) that both weigh in at about 7.5 pounds with scope.   I wouldn't trade either for a heavier rifle for blacktail woods beating.

I've had two Ruger GSR's. After my first was stollen I immediately replaced it. I can't say enough good things about them but they aren't the lightest offering. Probably as close as a bolt gun can get to the handiness of a Winchester lever gun.

I shoot all scopes with both eyes open but the forward mounted scopes you're referring too are "scout" scopes.

If you want a light scout rifle for your wife you may also consider one of the discontinued Ruger Frontiers.  They have a floor plate rather than detachable box magazine and forward mounting points for a scout scope.   Most are laminate stocks which are heavy but there are lots of aftermarket or take off options for the M77.

Jeff Cooper based the original scout off a Remington 600.  I have one in .308 set up scout style with a Leupold VX-II 1.5-4x28 and it is extremely light and handy.  3+1 is plenty for woods bumming around here and it carries much more nicely for hunting than the detachable box mag.  Like the Frontier, you can find the 600/660 in various 6-7mm chamberings which she may also prefer vs .308 which has noticeable recoil in a 5.5 pound rifle.

All in all, the Ruger Scout Rifle is a darn nice gun. It comes with a ghost ring peep sight, but you can also mount either a traditional scope over the receiver or a long eye relief scout scope on the picatinny rail over the barrel.
Ruger has traditionally offered the rifle in .308 Winchester with either a 16.1" or an 18.7" barrel, but they've recently started selling models in 5.56mm NATO, 6.5 Creedmoor, and .450 Bushmaster as well.
