down side to logging

Well there is a downside to logging, it concentrates the game especially during the winter, making it much easier for wolves. 

Want to see what I'm talking about?  Go snowshoe in some fresh logging areas and check it out.   Its a slaughter fest.

they've been doing a lot more logging in the colville national lately, which is good and needed, but I just wanted to point out that it concentrates the wintering deer/elk and moose which is a boon for the wolves.  I quit taking pics of wolf sign, maybe I should start again

Hopefully the human presence will push the wolves off the gathering that happens when areas are logged in the winter and food is scarce. It most definitely attracts a lot of deer/elk.
We used to joke about the 372xp being the best deer call ever made.

Anywhere close to my neighborhood?  Doesn't look like much snow.     I assume not CNF if cutting firewood.

couple days ago I took 4-5 different roads, roughly 20+ miles of woods by snowmobile, every road had wolf tracks + scat.


Right now the snow is rotten and frozen rock hard, very loud crunch crunch and hard to see tracks,  we're suppose to get snow tonight and I plan to go out in the following days.   

Perhaps I'll get some fresh pictures, the one posted above is from ~5 years ago and was taken right after WDFW told the world they killed the wedge wolf pack following a big protracted battle by the local ranchers, clearly they did not kill the wedge wolf pack as this pic was taken just a few miles up from the Diamond M Ranch in the Wedge (I have no affiliation with them)

 

Now we've learned that when WDFW say's they "killed the pack of wolves" that means they killed at least one of the breeding alphas,  thereby removing the proper definition of "wolf pack" which is a breeding alpha pair, it doesn't mean they've killed every single wolf in a pack.  It's all about the definitions.  Of course we all know there'll be a new pair of alpha's the very next breeding season, but until then it's not a "pack" any longer.

I might sneak up today but I have to work later, next couple days off I'll pound it hard try to get my cat if it stays open, if not I might go south to 121 and hunt there. 


with this snow coming I'd like to cut a bunch of trail, makes it easier to come back the next day and see what's crossed my tracks.

Well, I'll say it,  there is NO down side to logging!!   Its helps more then it hurts wildlife. 

The "down side" is the introduction of a exterminated predator.    Spent many a day hunting logged off  areas and making them.   Had to chase deer out of falling strips after taking lunch breaks,  they loved the green/black moss on the trees laying on the ground,  easy picken's!!

Take out the apex predator and things will go back to some form of normalcy.   Oh ya, wolves don't run to well in thick timber, but in the open, watch out!
