28 Nosler Recoil

I am considering a 28 Nosler. I like the ballistics but have never shot one. Compared to 30-06 how’s the recoil? I know that is a bit subjective but trying to get a general idea of what I might be up against.

More than 30-06. To me it feels similar to a 300 win mag.

This is a pretty broad question, hard to answer since it depends a lot on the rifle and how its set up

I would suggest figuring out what type of setup your thinking of and finding someone with a similar magnum cartridge setup to try if your recoil sensitive. I would also recommend knowing what you want a 28 nosler to do for you before choosing a set up & spending your money. If your shooting ranges & abilities are under 400 yds then save your money or look at some other cartridges in the 28 family that have less recoil and way cheaper to shoot.

Gonna be 20+ grains of powder over a 30-06 so recoil will be a good bit more in a like platform.  Brake can take them down considerably however.  With a brake, hearing protection is a must.  Well hearing protection should be a must at the range and in the field but that's a whole other topic

It all depends how the rifle is set up. Mine has a directional brake and good pad. Kicks like a heavy barreled .243 to me. I'd happily let any woman or 12 yr old kid shoot it.

broad brush - typical loads and rifle weights -  you are at maybe 17-19lbs of recoil in 3006 and maybe 23-25 for a rem7mag, not much different for a 28 nosler i would suspect than the 7 mag. if you are a flincher, go with a brake, recoil reduction is noticeable. lots of variables in rifle config for recoil. These are just generic ranges.

I shoot a 7mm Blaser mag w/180's that is similar-ish to a 28 Nosler.  My rifle isn't particularly heavy and has a baffle type muzzle brake, I think baffle type brakes are not only more effective but quieter too, and the comparison MtnMuley made of one recoiling about like a 243 is pretty spot on and that's how I would describe mine as well. 

Even without a muzzle brake, these big 7mm's aren't that bad.  My dad used to have a 7-300WBY and I've shot a 7STW a fair amount, both are about the equivalent of a 28 Nosler, that were un-braked and weren't bad to shoot at all.

Thanks all. That helps. I think I’ll stick with the old school round like the win mag or 06 for now. My self imposed limit is 400 and I don’t reload yet so I’ll keep it simple.
