Looking for my first fish finder
« on: January 27, 2019, 11:48:00 AM »
I’ve been looking at the portable clamp on type for my 12 ft aluminum boat for fishing the local lakes. I’m only finding a few options of them made by Hummingbird. Any of you folks use these? Any info good or bad would be appreciated. Can you troll with these type of fish finder?

I have had great luck with Garmin Fish finders.
The Garmin Striker series are a good fit for a small boat. I use to run a small 12v battery from Cabelas for my fish Finders. No need for a heavy marine battery.

Are you trolling with a trolling motor or outboard?

If it's a trolling motor just get a transducer that mounts to the bottom and run whatever head unit you want.

I had a portable one that had a suction cup transducer that ran off of rechargeable batteries.  That thing was money.

If you want a real good unit that will work for you now and be good enough for your ‘next’ boat too, I have a Garmin elite 5 listed on CL. For huntwa folks I’ll also include the hi res chip worth another $100+.
