Elk Bow 336-364
« on: April 21, 2019, 01:12:26 PM »
Hello everyone. First time posting, long time page lurker. Last November I moved out of Washington to Illinois for College. I will be moving back here in the next month or so. I recently just got a bow and thought I want to pick up elk hunting. I have only hunted elk once and It was roughly 10 years ago and I didn't do the hunting. my grandfather was hunting and I got to carry everything. this started my love for the outdoors. anyways I just got one of those nifty gmu maps for 364 rimrock. I noticed most of the units in the surrounding area is cow/spike only. figured its a great chance to get some meat in the freezer. this summer I plan on spending every weekend scouting. I have no idea what I am looking for and where to go really. ive read to get up high and away from the roads. I have never been to this section of Washington so pointers as to what I should be looking for. I see rimrock is some thick stuff and hard to glass. I am more then willing to park my car, set my gps tracker and walking into the bush and not returning to my car for a couple of days. general directions, vague locations or a starter spot to hike around for any gmu in this general area. honestly any little bit of info helps as its most likely new to me. thanks everyone!

Not sure how much help you will get here, but you are on the right track.  I would look at a map and find some areas that have the least amount of road access, and then go scout it.  You might be able to dig up some intel in the search feature here as well from prior posts.  As far as what to look for, old rubs, and wallows would be a good indicator that in Aug/Sept elk should be in that area.  Once you find some of those might throw out some trail cameras.

Will an elk fit in your car

Just a heads up rimrock and clear lake get a lot of traffic in the spring summer and some of fall. People camping at the lake also like to target shoot so be careful walking that area if you go by there. The air force also uses the area for training so be ready to have fighter jets flying over barely above tree line. I’ve seen them in the unit but I haven’t seen them in September(not saying they’re not there). Good luck
