Bear Nest
« on: May 13, 2019, 07:43:07 AM »
Ran into something I have not seen before.  Found a flattened out area on the uphill side of a slope with grass that was all pressed down/flattened out.   The flat grass was an area about 6 feet long and 3 feet wide.  Within a 10 foot radius of the flattened spot were no less than 17 piles of week old or newer of bear scat.  Clearly some were cubs due to the small size of the scat.

My guess is this was a base of operations for a sow and set of cubs for a few days.  I did bump a sow with 3 cubs about 1/3 to 1/2 a mile away while walking in the area.

Would be a fun area to set up cams.

I found one of those over in Idaho one year and slapped a bait barrel there.  It was active right away and had multiple bears on it.  Friend of mine took a really nice red cinnamon off of that bait.

last fall I snuck within 40 yards of a nice bear in its "nest" sleeping, waited 2 hours for a shot and never got one.
The bed looked just like the one you pictured, but with a bear in it  :chuckle:

This was all I seen, but he did get up and move around but kept the pine between me and him.
