Mackerel
« on: June 26, 2019, 11:58:10 AM »
Does anyong know anywhere I can fish for Mackerel. I dont have a boat so I fish from shore, I don't mind walking or hiking as long as there are good number of them there. I used to fish for them in So. California, they are fun to fish for. Anybody up for it, we can go together as well. I also often fish at Westport Jetty in the summer.

Hopefully nowhere in WA waters.  They are only this far north in el nino years when the water is way too warm.  Bad news for salmon.

^^This, I have caught them at Neah Bay many years ago while salmon fishing. Not sure if there will be much shore access to them if they even show up here this year.
Fish hard, hunt harder!

Thanks everyone, I saw someone posted their video catching them up as far north as Canada. I used to catch them around the tip of the jetty at Newport Beach CA, and  some piers with clear water. I have try Edmond and Deception pass with no luck.

Last time that I caught them in Puget Sound was back in the 1990's.  There were a couple of years back then when they infested just about everywhere.  I even caught them one year in Barkley Sound.  They were the small (Spanish Mackerel); very aggressive and they reeked havoc on salmon smolt.

Way back in the day when I lived in Texas we targeted King Mackerel as they were a hoot to catch.  The Spanish were around but we never really messed with them there.  I don't care much the taste of either species.  I'll be happy if they never return to Puget Sound.
