Lanai Axis Deer

Who has done the hunt? Do you have to hire an outfitter? I am going to ask some old friends who grew up on the island and see if they have family who will take me next May. It is our 30th anniversary so we are going to Maui and Lanai. The wife told me to do an Axis deer hunt while we are there.!!! Yeeeehaw.!!!

Lanai requires a draw . . . I know that much. . . at least it use to.

I would hunt Molokai... there are Axis deer everywhere on that island. No season and no bag limit. With that said they are harder to get to on public land but I know a guy or two that could help you with a deer off their property. If interested about Molokai, PM me. I've hunted that island a time or two, but never Lanai.

You can hunt Axis on Maui or Lanai, You will need to get an outfitter. the one on Maui is Maui Hunting Safari, but I can send a text to my uncle who lives on Lanai and he can send me the info.

Make sure you have your hunter safety card on you, past licenses don't count as proof of taking the course.

I have done axis on Lanai. There's basically 2 types of land - state and company. State land (CGMA) you need to apply for, company land you essentially pay a trespass fee to hunt on (it's managed by "the company", I think they're called Pulama Lanai or something). State land has seasons, archery is usually feb I think, and last year it was does only for archery. Company land I believe you can hunt every day, at least the archery sections of it, and you should be allowed to shoot bucks. You can also pay for an outfitter on Lanai, I think they have their own private section of company land just for them? I've never done it tho, it's pretty expensive.
If you got a few days, the state land hunt or company land hunt isn't too bad. Lots of deer everywhere. Don't know anything about rifle or muzzleloader hunting there, I assume the regs are different than archery but never done it. I do know that company land permits for rifle cost much more than archery, and may only last a day or so whereas archery permits last a whole year (at least they used to, not sure about this year if it changed or not).
