Hornady GMX or any other solid bullets on black bear
« on: July 23, 2019, 12:52:00 PM »
Well my question is, what's your thoughts and preference on solid bullets on bears. Im reloading for a 308 win and a 7mm mag. Wanting to try Hornady GMX bullets bother 150 gr.
Any thoughts or experience with these 2. Would like to be all around round for both guns.

I've found in my limited bear killing adventures the interlock and a barnes solid were instakill devastation.  I'd use a gmx all day long.

They should work just fine. I've killed quite a few animals including black bears with Barnes TSX and TTSX bullets which are monolithic bullets similar to the GMX.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

I shot my biggest bear(326 lbs) with a Hornady Superformance SST in 165 grain. The bear only made it about 40 yards and expired, the bullet didn't exit the opposite side. The GMX I would imagine is just as good of a bullet. You can't go wrong with Hornady bullets, hope it works out well for you.

My wife killed a massive 7x7 Roosevelt bull last year with my 7mm-08 pushing a factory Hornady 139gr GMX bullet. Dropped that huge bull right where he stood, blew through both shoulders and lodged in the offside hide. Bullet did exactly as it should. I would use it for bear without worries.

If i take my .308 out for bear ill be using 165gr gmx.  Never shot anything but paper with them before.  First order of business though is to tag a bear with my .30-30 or .460s&w

Well I guess I'll just have to try these out, I already bought 50 of each so I can give it a shot this year and see how they do.
Thanks for everyone's input

My furthest bear taken was 377yds with a custom weatherby in 338winmag shooting a Barnes TSX 210gr. Bullet went in, through the heart, exited, and broke the far side leg. Bear went three steps, groaned and fell. Done in seconds. Bear was 202lbs field dressed.
The TSX is my go to for all big game.
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.
