This weekends weather for scouting
« on: September 26, 2019, 04:55:21 PM »
Im headed out for one last scouting trip/camera check on sunday to nail down my plans for the opener in a couple weeks.  Looks like the NE is gonna get a little snow/wind/rain and I’m hoping i can use this.  Past 2 years were my first and scouting was done in nice weather.  I was just going to pick up the cameras and do as little disturbance as possible.  So far limited buck sign but thought maybe i could take advantage of the weather and spend more time sitting and watching for deer up and moving or checking for heavy trails in the snow/mud.   Should i alter my plans and do a little more scouting or just stay out of the way and wait till the season starts?  If i have bucks on cam ill definitely  get out and leave them be.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I scout, it is time to move.  I try to be as minimally intrusive as possible and I rarely see deer.  I'm focused on fresh sign rather than seeing animals.  Scouting is an information gathering event.  Sitting while hunting is a good idea.  Sitting while scouting is (in my mind), a waste of my limited time.  Your trail cams already did the sitting for you.  Take that information and incorporate it into whatever else you can find while out.

I don't hunt the Eastside - mine is a Westside mentality.  I don't worry about deer seeing me or knowing I was there.  There are always people in the woods around here.  The deer get over the intrusion pretty quickly if you don't act like a hunter.  Take some granola and wear colorful beads.  The deer will never know what you were up to.

"Take some granola and wear colorful beads"  - I freakin love it!  Probably the best camo pattern out there.
