Deer fatally attacks hunter who shot him

In what officials are calling a bizarre incident, an Arkansas hunter was killed by a deer that he thought he had shot dead.
Thomas Alexander, 66, was hunting deer near Yellville on Tuesday night when he believed he had successfully shot a deer, officials said.
Alexander, who lived in the area and was an experienced hunter, was sitting in an elevated deer stand during the state's muzzleloader season, Keith Stephens, chief of communications with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, told ABC News.
After going down to check on his "kill," Alexander soon discovered that the animal was in fact not dead.
There was deer blood found in the location where the attack happened, Stephens said.
"It appears he shot the deer and he had put his rifle down near the deer stand and walked down to check and make sure it was dead," Stephens said. "And that's when whatever happened, happened."

The deer, which was not fatally injured, got back up and attacked Anderson, who suffered several puncture wounds on his body.
"Our assumption is the deer did gore him with his antlers," Stephens said.
Alexander was by himself but was able to call his family for help, who then called emergency responders. He later died at the hospital.
Officials do not plan to do an autopsy.
"It's strange. Probably the only time it ever happened. We did have one in 2016 in southern Arkansas -- but that hunter survived," Stephens said.
Officials are still looking for the deer, Stephens said.

A good lawyer should get the deer off on a self-defense plea.

Wow but not too surprised. I recall reading somewhere that deer species attack humans much more frequently than predators. Sad story though.

A sad way to go out. My dad taught me early to make sure it's dead before approaching and if in doubt, Look for breathing, poke it in the eye with a long stick etc... Not sure what his experience was but it was something he mentioned a few times.

Very sad for his family. I was taught to always check the deer with a loaded gun also.

Very sad.  I was taught the same, poke it in the head with the barrel of a loaded rifle, if it moves, pull the trigger.

Back in the 1980's I was hunting with a person who shot a deer in Idaho and rushed up to claim it. The deer was not dead and when he reached for it. The deer swung it's head and the horns tore his jeans. He was very lucky that he was not stabbed.

Have to be especially careful with headshots as the deer can be knocked unconscious and seem dead.

Also have to let them rest a bit before you start with the knife. I head shot a spike BT at point blank range a couple years ago. Was on him immediately and got going with the knife. The second I got through the hide his nerves caused him to kick. Hoof caught me under the chin, torqued my neck around and knocked me over.

Could have been a bad deal if he had hit me in the throat or somewhere softer.

First buck as a kid that I shot I went up to and got a pretty good kick to the gut that rolled me down a hill. Years later I tracked a buck that I had hit. I jumped over a deadfall and the buck was laying right there. He jumped up and tried to gore me. I set a record on jumping back over the deadfall.

Helped a guy find his deer 2 weekends ago. I heard a shot, and got up on a stump to look around. I spot 2 guys up on the ridge looking around. About then 30 yards downhill from them, I see a buck moving towards me, and then nothing, it doesn't come out again. I waved the guy, and we srarted across the cut toward each other. Got about 5 feet from the guy, and as I start to tell him, I saw your deer , that buck jumped up right between us and tried to run. Scared the crap out of both of us. Buck only went about 20 yards and crashed, and the old man snuck up there and finished him off. We were really fortunate that the buck wasn't facing one of us when he jumped up and ran. Pretty sure it was the buck I had seen several times this summer, and again on opening weekend, but I couldn't get a shot at him.

When I lived in South Carolina, I had a guy that worked for me get mauled by his "dead" deer. He was hunting from a tree stand and shot the deer right below him. Deer went down immediately. Guy climbed out of the stand and approached the deer. Deer jumped up and attacked with horns and feet.  Guy was really tore up. Missed about 3 months of work but lived.
