Crawdad Trap

Set my first crawfish trap this morning and then went fishing within view of my pot. The trap was set along the bank.


In the two hours I was there, I watched two separate people go up to my buoy and pull up the trap.

Needless to say I did not catch any. Glad my trap was not taken but why is it anyones buissness unless your FISH AND GAME.

 Because crawfish are tasty and traps cost money.

They may not have known what it is and just wanted to pull the rope and see what was out there.  I bet less than 1% of the population has ever set a crawdad trap.  If they had nefarious tendencies, it would probably be gone.

Just out of curiosity does your trap have a float on the end with your info on it? Not that it makes too big of a difference but I miiiiiight pull on a random line to see what it is but would never touch a marked bouey.

I've had the ol' "Hey, that's mine, what are you doing touching something that doesn't belong to you?" yell from down a river or across it.  Really burns me that people do that.  I mean, if it's some kid, I'm more apt to let it pass because kids are curious and that's fine, but an adult doing that?  Oh no you di int. 

At any rate, I tend to keep my traps closer to me or I'll place them right at dark and remove them in the morning at first light. 

Again... an adult doing that?

Weve had that happen too, people think they have the right to mess with others stuff.

Likely I would let them know that interfering with the lawful taking or attempting taking of game is a crime and if i see them touch my gear again they will need to explain their actions to the law.

It goes along with trapping as well at least once a year someone gets a trap stolen or a caught animal released still illegal to touch iv had both crawdad traps stolen and beaver traps destroyed it's a rough go when you can't leave something and trust your fellow man to not tamper or thieve your stuff! Game cameras that are well hidden go a long way in a lawsuit just fyi

Yeah that’s off limits. I would have left it alone and if anything would have called the number on it if I had a question or concern. Then again I know people steal crab pots too. It’s not like these things are made of gold either. If you like crawdad a spend 10$ and get a trap.

My buoys have the required info plus "crawdad trap, please do not disturb". They are also small and camo'd grey and white.  I fish lake Washington and have been good so far.

You could always do like they do on Lake Washington and "Go Big" and make them work for their stolen catch.
