Just watched Best of the West
« on: April 04, 2009, 06:01:25 PM »
Just watched The Best of the West. They took a 450 yard shot at a 3x4 Mulie with a 6.5x284 and MISSED!!! I was shocked that they put it on TV? He got it the second shot and said he had to figure out the WIND!!! Really? What are your thoughts!!!

I saw that, looked like he did hit it the first time (thought the deer kicked at the shot), but who knows how well it was hit... or if it was really hit. Didn't have the volume up high so didn't hear some of what they were saying (family was sleeping).

Just proves that even with the thousands of dollars they put into their gear there is always the human factor at work. I know I'm not good enough to spank one that far out.. :p

Not a fan of that show.  I think it projects the wrong image and capabilitiies of firearm use in the field.  In my opionion.......a bunch of morons.

I agree its cool that you can shoot that good at that range but is it hunting?  If i can sit there talking out loud iand drinking a beer while watching a bull elk then decide i want to kill it i should half to gear up and start hiking.  Not just lay down and shoot.  Were is the thrill of the hunt?  I think if you want to shoot that far go hunt prarie dogs or shoot bench rest tornements.  And this show premotes people to take long shots that most are not capable of.  Im out there for the hunt not the kill.   My :twocents:

We all know that it can be done but should it be done? Seems to me I heard about some state banning .50 cal bmg for sport hunting because it was unfair to the game. Apparently some guys were bagging Elk from way long range with their .50 bmg's. (MONTANA?) :dunno:

At which point does it stop being hunting and is nothing more than shooting. I am all for getting closer but I will also take a long shot but this is getting kind of ridiculous. These guys are touting what great hunters they are. They are not great hunters they are great shots. There's not much hunting left in what they are doing.

When someone is shooting at a living target at long range when they can actually get closer and have a higher probability of a clean kill, this is where I think the line needs to be drawn. If the opportunity for a closer shot is there then that avenue should be pursued.  :twocents:

I think those real long shots should be left to the range. I shoot long range and its fun to have a good group at 450. But I hunt with my longbow where I need to get with in 20 yards.

That's how the archery guys look at rifle hunters... so, is shooting a rifle at all "hunting"?

Sure would of like to see the show but i missed out, i disagree with some of the guys on here saying leave those shots at the range, if your capable of being able to hit the animal in the present conditions you should take it, those conditions being the weather and also if there is a chance that you could get closer to the animal without spooking it you should try and do so.
I've seen alot of guys on hunting shows sitting in blinds or in stands that are infront of managed fields watching bucks move in and out all day then take there pick. In my opinion that is definately not hunting. Most of the shots they take are within 150 yds and require little or no skill at all! If a guy can shoot a nice buck from 450 yds on a show why not? After all it is for TV? I'd rather watch a guy shoot 600 yds at a nice buck and miss every single time then watch two guys in a blind trying to decide whether the buck they're looking at is bigger than the one they saw acouple hours before.
