Fur prices What is worth more
« on: November 26, 2019, 08:11:48 AM »
I'm curious from those that sell furs.
I'm not really concerned about what the price is, but what do most find more valuable in coyote pelts.  Is lighter or white preffered or is more color (like red) more preferred.  I figured prices would be the best way to judge that but I know there are a lot of other factors that determines what makes a nice pelt.

I guess the same question could be asked of Bobcats.  I always assumed the Eastern spotted whites would command a better price than the red dark westside cats.  I dont know if thats true or my preference.

anyone with experience with red fox?   Is there a preference over red, how deep the red is, or is say a black or mottled worth more.  I guess that might be cascade fox.

OPinions welcomed please.

Can’t speak on fox, but lighter/whiter “clear” coyotes are the preferred color. East of the cascades cats are better by a good margin, with more white underbelly and clearly defined spots being prized. There are some valuable westside cats that have heavy all over spotting but they’re the minority. Anything unique can also be valuable to taxidermists more so than the garment industry.

I can only speak about coyote. It use to be, white bellies and overall cream colors, but its now all about the backs. They are used for the trim trade, mainly around the hoods of coats. My understanding is that they can get about 3 good strips from a single coyote, and when coats like "Canada Goose" sell for almost $1000, getting a $100 for a good coyote skin almost sounds like a good deal! The Fashion trade dictates most of the prices in the fur market.

:yeah:everything that has been said about the color but I think right now the weight and quality e.g., damage are of more importance than color.

:yeah:  Once you drop below heavy there is a big drop in price.

Yes, "heavy" is the most important (meaning fur density) but fineness, or softness is a factor, and historically, pale colors are favored.  Typically lighter colored animals of all kinds have finer hair.

So, a dense, large, pale coyote would be preferred....in my experience.
