Idaho second tag question
« on: January 02, 2020, 03:32:08 PM »
Is the second tag just another tag without stipulation? Can i use the second tag on the first deer i harvest? Does the second tag say 2nd tag on it, or does it just look like any other tag?

Yes...just another regular tag, only stipulation is related to whatever tag it is (e.g., whitetail tag would only be good for wt).

In the regs there are some units that say second tag can’t be used. I’m assuming then because there isn’t a tag that says “second tag” that this just means if I kill a deer in say unit 28 I can’t use my remaining tag in one of those other units?

Hmmm...I forgot they had done that in 10a and a few others.  Off the top of my head I believe you can buy the wt tag first, then buy a regular tag as a NR leftover when they go on sale and then could hunt both 10a and 28...but maybe someone else can weigh in on that...I'm not 100% by any means on that nuance.

I was looking into two muley tags. Hunt one unit early October then hunt the late general season in unit 19 but it doesn’t appear that’s an option from my limited understanding of the regs. I’ll call Idfg office and get my bad news from them.

I think you still may be able to do that - I don't think its the order of purchase that matters...if you purchase a regular deer tag to hunt late general season 19, and happen to purchase a 2nd/leftover and go hunt 28 in Oct, using that tag on your harvest, you should be good.  Really all they are doing is stopping individuals from killing 2 deer in the same unit where they say "2nd res-nonres tags not allowed".  I'd bet you will be good to go killing 2 bucks in 2 different units...but definitely confirm with IDFG...post up what you confirm.  Or...just shoot 2 30" bucks in Unit 28 and not worry about hunting the late season!

I like your optimism, I’ll post what I find out. Thanks for your input thus far.

The second tag will be identified as such.

There is no stipulation on second tag beyond WT vs General. Some units only allow the harvest of a single deer. It doesn't matter which tag you use ( unless WT specific seasons), as long as only killing one deer. If not restricted to single deer then you can use the tag in whatever order you like.

Not sure where this info came from, here’s the regs:

Limits
Second deer tags may not be used in Units 10, 10A, 12, 16A, 17, 19, or 20.“

So if a second tag is identified as such then per the regs where it says "second tags can't be used in these units...." just means that the second tag i purchase is the tag i can't use then? If that is the case and there is no order in which i need to tag my first deer i would then just use my "second tag" on my first deer, retain my primary original tag and hunt the late general season in those units in which a second tag can't be used.

I talked to IDFG. The "second tag may not be used in these units..." from the regs means your second tag (leftover tag). They just don't want a person to harvest 2 deer in one of those units. For my sake, because there is no stipulation on the order in which tag you use first, i would just use my second tag first in a different unit  and then use my primary tag in one of the units that say "second tag may not be used".
