county public works land
« on: January 13, 2020, 03:28:22 PM »
so i found a really nice chunk of kittitas county public works dept land that runs adjacent to the yakima river. looking from google earth, i found what looked like a few beaver huts. i drove out today to take a peak and possibly set traps. there was a area closed sign, no parking, no hunting, so i called the county office looking for information regarding the land. they told me that since no hunting was allowed, that they wouldnt allow trapping as well. ok, but its public land correct? how are we not allowed to use it? is it liability that they have if youre on it? any info is appreciated. not looking to argue, just clarification.

i ended up going to another area and setting up on the river. lots of action along the shoreline so i set a few swim throughs and hope a beaver or otter comes through. any advice on setting on the river anyone wants to share? im still very much in the learning process but picking it up fairly quickly. thanks in advance for any and all replies.

It may well be public land but it is owned by the county and in basic terms they have posted it.  I think the 'area closed' is what gets you on the sign.  If it was just no parking and you could park a ways away and walk then as long as you were not hunting you would probably be ok.  But when they added area closed that means no access.  There is a lot of state (DOT for example)  and county land that is basically posted just like private land.

Might still be worth another visit - they may welcome the beaver taken out....  Just find the right guy in the county office...

Work up the chain a bit. Find someone who has been around for a while who has experienced beaver problems; I'll bet you will get the answer you want.

Thanks guys for the replies. I’m fine with the answer I got today, might just have to go have a face to face and pursue it a bit further and see what they have to say. Just weird to have these lands and keep everyone out. They have a bunch of sections that are attached or right off the river. Weird to keep it closed to me, but that’s gov I guess

I know of a couple places like you describe. For the most part, they want people out so they don't have to clean up after people. They have enough of that with other open properties.
