Thermal Hunt, Dogs down
« on: May 27, 2020, 07:29:32 PM »
Hey guys, I want to give a shout out to Brad and Craig at Thermal Predator Control who took my son and I coyote hunting last weekend. A few months ago I saw a post by Brad and thought I would reach out to him ask a few questions about doing a hunt. Juggling schedules and the covid we settled on last Saturday. Brad‘s partner picked us up and we headed to meet Brad and go over details of the hunt. Brad was great at laying out how the thermals worked and what to expect as the night went on. We did a quick site in to get familiar with the riffles and we were off to the first set up of maybe eight I don’t recall. There was a coyote popping off a ways out so we repositioned and started calling again. Sure enough, here it comes, my son gets first opportunity, bang, definite hit, and I backed him up with a follow up shot, first dog down.  After a setup or two the guys spotted a Badger that was pretty exciting.  We could hear some more dogs popping off in the distance so we repositioned again. Sure enough hear comes two, I’m on the left, my son is on the right. The dog on the left comes down the hill to my left and starts barking and howling, all I could see was his neck and head. I’m waiting, thinking my son is going to shoot, not realizing he is on the second dog. Brad is giving me the go ahead, shoot, shoot” So what’s a guy to do, throat punch him. Dog down. I scanned looking for the other dog, found it but wasn’t certain so I held off of shooting, then my son shot. Looked like a solid shot. Two dogs down, so we thought. We spent probably 20 minutes looking for mine, I walked right past it, it was tucked under sage brush. As three of us were down range looking for the dogs, the second dog gets up and runs off with no shot opportunity. Craig and my son searched hoping to locate it but no such luck. We continued on to more set ups, we had a few pairs come in then get hung up a bit out of range, and a few that just didn’t want to play at all. Many times we had dogs all around us, it was quite fun, almost like a shooting gallery. We ended the night watching deer with dogs howling in the back ground and the sun rising, what a fun and memorable night!
