Going Somewhere?
« on: August 28, 2020, 04:55:11 PM »
Just wondering what others have planned for the early season.
For the archery deer and grouse opener I'll be going over to my cabin in the Methow for a few days. I haven't hunted the valley since 2015, focusing on blacktails instead to take the pressure of at least one guy off the battered herd, but I'm going to give it a go this year. Later in the month I'll be going a bit farther east for a second deer permit but that's a private land hunt that I don't anticipate will involve much hunting.

Good luck and good hunting, it's been a crazy year and we've earned some time in the outdoors.

I'll be in the Winthrop area this next week, chasing grouse around Thompson Ridge.

Come rifle season we will be prowling all of the drainages up Little Bridge Creek.

Good luck, and stay safe.

Ill be in 231 for the holiday focusing on the whitetails. Depending on where you are in Twisp there may be a lot of whitetail around you if you wanna give the mules a break. That's why I have been focused on whitetails in that area for about 5 years now, the herd is in shambles. An old timer named Bob, his family used to own a ton of property in Mazama (the Davelaars), and he told me about herds of mule deer right in Mazama up to the 1970s. Then the north cascades highway came through and it was all down hill from there. Old Bob had a few 30 plus inch mules on his wall and he didn't even hunt much.

I forgot all about grouse. Gonna have to make some time for that. One year Delancey Ridge in 218 was just full of them. Darn tasty too I honestly can't taste any game taste at all with them.

I'll be in mazama too, always hunt at least the first weekend at my folks place before I venture off with other family or friends. Says he had had a nice whitetail buck frequenting the place the last few weeks.

Far out. If I recall correctly, we are talking about and know the same area. And yes from what I've seen there are a small handful and it might be the one in the target buck thread I posted that he is seeing. I've only scouted once but from what I could tell that buck and a few others are travelling far and wide in this area. One is much larger but I only ever see bucks like him in the summer   :dunno:  and have not caught him on camera.

The bog up top with the reeds might be holding them in the day, but I haven't checked it out yet this year.

Well here's to hoping we can both smack bruisers! Usually it's a doe or small buck I see and my schedule doesn't allow me much time to be picky. There definitely are some good looking bucks in the area still though. Good luck to you!

Be in the high Methow country tonight to chase Blues with my dog. Things look promising. I am sure there will be plenty of archery road hunters looking for a deer to place a tag on next to the road as usual
