High Buck and Smoke
« on: September 15, 2020, 07:58:46 AM »
Anyone else holding off on heading into any of the wilderness areas because of the smoke? Seems like it might be a waste of time right now.

I was planning to go out near Glacier Peak for a few days, but the smoke canceled those plans.  Smoke is shutting me down...

The reports will be interesting, I think when its this smokey the hunting tends to be tougher.

My buddy just left to head into the GPW. I'm saving my vacation days at work for October I think, just gonna join him for the weekend.

We were joking about whether the deer will taste smokey if we do get one. Pre-seasoned!  :chuckle:

I was over in the NE helping my buddies with archery elk and looking for bear.  I couldn't glass more than 150 yards at the most.  The smoke was terrible and I had to bail after 3 days.  I am all packed up for high buck in the Pasayten, just waiting for the smoke to clear a bit.

I took 2 weeks off to go hit the high hunt but the smoke definitely has me constantly changing my plans.  I wanted to go back to work, but it has also been canceled due to smoke. I may just save my time  for October if it continues

This smoke sucks, then it looks like Fri-Sat will be a rain and fog fest near the cascade crest.  I read recently that fog can even be worse in smoky conditions because the particulates give moisture something else to condense onto.

Unfortunately, family and work obligations have forced my hand.  I'll be out in the rain, fog, and smoke this weekend regardless.  Hopefully the smoke will have dissipated some at least!

Aside from lower visibility, what affect do you think the smoke will have on the animals?  I assume they'll bed down more and stay closer to their water sources?  But they still need to feed, right?

I think they do the same thing as usual unless you pressure them or there is a real serious turn in the weather like extended heavy snowfall.  During the high hunt, they should be on the same routine except they do it about a minute and a half later in the mornings and a minute and a half earlier in the evenings.  Fog can provide you a lot of good cover.

FYI smoke was only in the valleys today in our neck of the world. I was up archery deer hunting @6000' and it was partly sunny/cloudy.....zero smoke.
