Blacktail blowing
« on: October 25, 2020, 10:05:49 PM »
Hi All,

New to the forum and looking to learn. Little bit of hunting experience but definitely novice. And here's a novice question.

Do both does and bucks blow when alarming for danger? I was moving very slowly and quietly through an area this weekend and suddenly I hear this loud screaching/wheezing sound followed by the sound of a large animal breaking brush and moving quickly. Never saw it but based on sound I believe I had unknowingly gotten within 15 yards before it bolted. Not knowing for sure what it was i dropped into a ravine, looped around some thick reprod and ended up jumping it again and heard the same sounds. Eventually I concluded the sound was the wheezing of a wounded animal. So I backed off figuring it was shot by another hunter. Well turns out it was the sound of a deer blowing as I found the exact same sounds on youtube.

Since I never saw the deer I can't say whether it was a doe or buck. All the youtube videos I found of a deer blowing were videos of does. But the deer I heard was all alone on a northwestern facing slope right at the edge of old growth meets reprod making me think it was a buck.

Do bucks making blowing sounds also? Would a doe be bedded down all alone in the area described?

Thanks for any tips you might provide.

 :yeah:

Every opinion I've ever heard on blowing is that the doe will do it, bucks don't hang out to find out what's making noise near them.  They're just gone.  On the other hand, any chance it was a snort wheeze?

Pretty certain it was a blowing. It sounded exactly like the sounds in this video.

I had an old 6x5 whitetail buck blow at me just like a doe a couple years ago.  I didnt think bucks did that either.

I had a blacktail buck blow/wheeze at me a couple years ago when he came trotting out from behind a bush, and nearly ran into me.

I'm so relieved. When I first read the title of the thread, I thought this was some new thing PETA was doing to be kind to wildlife. Carry on.

There’s one old 3x4 blacktail buck that I’ve been chasing for a few years that does that.  We nicknamed him Weezy.

thats how I shot my big buck 3 years ago. Listened to him get closer and closer every wheeze, until he popped out of the brush at 20 yards trotting directly at me and I smoked him with the 30-06.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Hey all thanks for the replies. It is encouraging to know it could have been a buck. Either way I count this season as a personal success. The last day of rifle season I had another close encounter. This time it was certainly a doe but I feel I've found some good hunting ground, saw some deer and learned a ton.

Plan to hit the same area for late season muzzleloader. Attached pics of my hunting area.
