Chrono results
« on: April 17, 2009, 07:27:43 AM »
I finally got some range time with enough sunlight to get the chrono to work.  The results may be of interest to some:

50 cal, Knight Bighorn.  All charges 100grains of 777, 3 shot averages:

Bullet                    Sabot      Velocity fps
Knight   310        Orange     1875
Sierra   300        Black        1829
Hornady   300        Green       1861

I also found out that a clean bore is worth 150 – 200 fps

interesting. I wonder if it has an exponentially similar effect on modern rifles.

with how close those speeds are I would think it would come down to prise per bullet and accuracy for your rifle. I need to pick up a chrono to play around with.

This may be true but a clean bore is going to also shoot about 3-6 inches different than a slightly dirty bore will.  Personally before I sight my ML in I put one or two round through it to dirty it up.  Otherwise you'd have to shoot one round.  Clean it perfectly with solvent shoot another round etc.  This would take all day.  I've found that even if you punch your bore a few times the difference between a clean bore and a punched bore is still 2-3 inches.

My Knight tends to shoot about 2 inches higher on a clean bore, then after that it's golden. Those are interesting results, mostly because I shoot the Knight bullets and 777 powder as well, but in the 265 gr (or 260, or whatever they are) with 110 gr. So I'm expecting mine shoots a tad faster. And I never really thought of a dirty bore taking that much away, but I guess it makes sense.

I don’t find that to be true either.  For me, a clean bore = an accurate rifle.  But I have found that an oily bore is not accurate when shooting sabots.  Sabots must be kept clean and dry to be consistent.  If I’ve oiled my bore for storage I will either clean the oil out with alcohol or I’ll fire one shot to burn off the oil, then clean with a moist patch.  After that I can get two shots in before accuracy starts to fall off.  A quick cleaning with a moist patch after two shots and it’s good to go again.
