bighorn 209 conversion
« on: December 24, 2020, 03:45:43 PM »
Looking to convert my muzzy (Knight Bighorn) to shoot with 209 primers.  In going through the kit when I bought it I found these.  Looks like the breech plug might be the right one?  Not sure about the red things and pliers are for?  All I need is the correct cocking device specific to 209s?  Not up to date with muzzleloaders.

You have everything you need right there.
The pliers are to press the 209 into the red plastic jacket.
Insert the plastic jacket into the breech plug, and you are ready to fire.
Your hammer is the correct one for 209 and percussion

Here are some pictures/story/testing: https://www.muzzleloaders.com/water-proof-muzzleloader-209-primer-ignition-system/

If your hammer has the cone I suggest not using the musket caps as I found that the cone cuts a small disc out of the top of the cap when it slams down and that small disc gets lodged in the nipple !

If you need a hammer with the cone let me know I have an extra that I removed because of the issues with the 209 ignition in the bighorn and went to the musket hammer and nipple and won't go back !

That breech plug looks a little different than the one on my 209 wolverine, mine has a “nipple” that the rpj seats onto. The jackets do have a step on the front of them, I’m assuming that fits into the front of a breech plug like the one you have.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Yes my hammer is the cone but not very sharp of an angle :dunno:  Maybe I will take it out and see if it shoots.  last day of elk season I hunted all day with a musket cap on, and at the end of the day I was going to shoot into a target only to discover the cap did not go.

This picture might offer you a better look at Knight's Universal hammer.

Also the picture of the Breech Plug in your pic is probably a Bare 209 plug.  There is a magnet in the bottom of the primer pocket to hold the primer in place.  I would suggest a 209 capper to install the primer and you remove it with a finger nail.

The Red Plastic Jacket breech plug looks like this.

You need a Knight tool to install the RPJ on the nipple post and and the same tool will remove the the RPJ. In my opinion the RPJ is a safer method of ignition than the bare primer.

Personally I gave up on both of them and use #11 mag caps or RWS Dynamit Noble 1075 plus .  With the #11 caps you can make the breech area virtually water proof with the right nipple installed.
