Mercury 15hp help
« on: July 17, 2021, 03:22:12 PM »
So my wife bought me a 2002 merc 15hp 2 stroke short shaft manual start about 7 years ago. Runs phenomenal as usual, however today when firing it up since last time at the end of duck hunting I noticed with it not running that rev full throttle is 100% open on carb and that fwd full throttle is only 50% throttle on the carb. I can visually see that rev opens 100% more than fwd. is this a safety thing? I feel like rev should be half of fwd since most folks putt slowly in rev. I always felt like for a 15 it should be a little faster but this makes me think it’s actually got a lot left that I’ve never seen.

Anyone have experience messing with the merc twist throttle. The tiller throttle spins one way for forward, middle throttle is neutral and the other direction is reverse.

I had a15 Merc for years, loved it. But no, I sure cant remember fwd full throttle not opening the carb all the way open. Wonder if a previous owner disassembled the motor and mixed up the cables?

I cannot speak specifically for your engine, but it sounds like the controls are swapped or something. On my 2008 Mercury 9.9 4-stroke, neutral is about 2/3 open on the carb compared to in forward.
