.308 bullet choice
« on: August 31, 2021, 05:52:55 PM »
Ammo is available but you can't be very picky these days. Which factory ammo do you think is better out of a .308? These 2 are all I have. Assume they shoot the same group.

Hornady outfitter GMX 165gr (all copper)
Federal fusion 150gr (bonded jacket)

What are you hunting? If the rifle shoots both well. fusion I would use more deer sized game and go Gmx if hunting bigger critters elk etc.

Right now I'm chasing black bears and the gun is sighted in with the 165gr GMX. I'll use the same gun for deer and elk later this year.

Looks like it’s out of stock currently, but my .308 LOVES this ammo.

Stick with the GMX, especially since your gun is already sighted in for it

I had great luck with the GMX factory ammo and grouping well a couple years ago.  Never killed with it but wouldn't hesitate to.  If you sighted in with it.....than why change?

Which ever is more accurate,is my suggestion.
I use 150 gr in my 308 ,but have loaded 165 and had them shoot well also.
150 gr is the sweet spot for 308 in my opinion. Less drop, most velocity, still got enough energy at the other side to do the job.
150 gr in 308 ,is like vanilla ice cream and Apple pie.

My 308 (Rem VTR) likes both the 150 & 165 Barns TSX bullets. The 150's are my go to choice for deer and elk. I use 40gr of IMR3031  for the 150's and 42gr of IMR4064 for the 165 they group the same at 200 yards. If your gun shots the GMX well stick with them.

My wife and I shoot the 139gr GMX out of my 7mm-08 mountain rifle and we’ve yet to have an animal take a step after being hit with it. One 7x7 bull elk, one spike elk, and two black tail bucks dropped like they were hit by the hammer of Thor.

Especially since you're already sighted in with it, I'd go with the 165gr GMX ammo in your shoes. That's a great all around hunting load for the 308 if it shoots well for you.

I got lucky and found some cheap FMJ target ammo that groups just like the GMX. Now I can practice without spending over $2 each shot.
