Cabin at Pacific Beach
« on: November 03, 2021, 07:49:43 AM »
Hello,
I rented a cabin at pacific beach this weekend. Hope to do some razor clams  (always a good time.) Anyways I was wondering if anyone has any experience fishing in the mouth of Joe Creek or the mouth of Copalis river. I plan to do some surf perch fishing but I'm wondering if I might run across a salmon in either of those rivers? We throw crab rings in west port marina but never have thrown rings or pots around ocean shores. Is there anywhere worth it to throw a ring or pot in ocean shores or is it mostly a snare game from damon point? Thanks for any insight.
Cheers.

Don’t think you can fish the mouth of joe creek in unless something changed. It’s a pretty small section of water, only open between the 2 bridges, not much access or parking.  I do remember seeing an adventurous guy in a pontoon down there once, though.

I used to fish the copalis behind the green lantern tavern a bit when I lived out that way. Seen some very nice fish in there but they really seem to get the lockjaw bad.  It’s a really snaggy river too.

For salmon your best bet would probably be the humptulips up by the hatchery.  This time of year was always my favorite, usually some big late silvers around. Good eggs or #5 vibrax spinners will do the trick.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

Nowhere to reliably catch crabs off the beach other than casted snares (which can be very productive).  Unless you have a boat and rings.  If so, the crabbing is really good in the bay this time of year since the commercial guys are all gone.  Of course, the wind is not cooperating lately.

I was reading people wade out on the inward side of Damon point and use dip nets or drop pots.  Have you ever done that?

Looking at the refs the mouth is open to salmon 31 Oct to December. I don’t know if it’s worth it if not. I was just going to fish it cause it was right by the cabin. I’ll check out those vibrax spinners thanks.

I have heard of people doing that.  Don't know anyone personally that has. I live within about a mile and never have tried it.  Never seen anyone doing it when I was down there.  Good luck!

Well I guess that would be a good hint for me that it’s a waste of my time lol. Thanks for the advice I’ll probably just stick to clams and perch.

Bring a small landing net and peruse the troughs on the beach at low tide. You'll find some keeper crab.
