Dillon 550B help!
« on: November 06, 2021, 08:15:07 PM »
For several years now I have been loading 9mm without a hiccup on my Dillon 550. I have a couple single stage presses and have done a lot of loading on those, about 3 years ago I bought all the stuff to swap over to .223 on the Dillon. I cannot keep the powder die from dumping powder everywhere. I’ve adjusted things several times and watched YouTube videos that didn’t help. I’m not sure what to do, I’m frustrated to the point that the dies are back in the box and I’ve considered giving up on it all together and just loading that on my single stage press

Agreed. Powder funnel/insert in the tube that sits on the case mouth and pushes on the  powder measure is not correct.

I’ll triple check tomorrow, I ordered the powder die and caliber conversion kit together, I was thinking that I had powder bridging but I tried the dryer sheet thing then tried tapping and shaking stuff, didn’t help

I 100% agree, you likely have the wrong insert. Which one in the picture are you running, right or left.

Only other thoughts would be:

1.  You have it set up to incorrectly and the powder is dropping before or after the case is completely seated.
2.  You have the wrong size powder bar in and you are filling the case to the max and have a lot of overflow with residual powder.  This is super easy to identify as you would have cases filled to the absolute rim which wouldn't even let you seat a bullet...or have a super compressed load.   :chuckle:
3.  If you using the correct insert, you have the wrong size and it is dumping around the outside of the funnel.....example having a 30 cal. funnel with a .223 cartridge would do this assuming you were able to get a powder dump.

the one on the right, the one on the left is what is in my 9mm powder die, on a different tool head

Dryer sheet with your brass got it. If the insert is correct then it has to be the powder bar or bar adjustment.  Trying to remember also.....if that insert is to deeply seated your case may be over pressing up and in.....hmmmm.

So you have the correct funnel, you need to make sure your powder is dumping at the right time.....when your brass is seated in the funnel's bevel.  If it is not then it will dump powder around the end of your brass.

I usually get the spillage as I lower the brass down out of the die, like it didn’t completely dump into the case, I go very slow, I’ve tried tapping the powder die to help it dump. I’ll try the dryer sheet thing again
