Capstan Winch
« on: December 30, 2021, 08:19:36 PM »
I received a Power Winch PCW5000 along with several other items to go with it, from my employer as a retirement gift. But one item I have no clue as to it’s use. I know several folks here have these winches. Anyone know what this is?

Looks like a choker rope. Just has the needle for ridgity to help you stuff it under a log or through a hole.

Yeah, choker rope.  The needle goes through the eye making a loop that tightens when pulled.  The hook from the winch goes on the middle link of the small piece of chain.

Congrats on retirement.

Yes it is a very nice gift. Been looking at them. Someone must have been looking over my shoulder.

It’s been a long haul but I held out till 70 to get the max from ssa. Ya I will put the winch to work. Had many times in my life already that I could have used it.

Big Congrats on your retirement ghosthunter! I've been retired for a few years now, and I'll be turning 70 this yr also. I have the same winch.

There are lots of videos on YouTube on its uses and attachments. I esp liked the one they pulled out a moose with it. I haven't used mine much yet but I was able to pull my quad into the utility trailer with it without any help when the quad wouldn't start.

One problem I had was keeping the winch level so it wouldn't shut off. They have a bracket that helps with this so I may pick one up and try that next.

Congrats again!

Used mine to pull a 6 pt bull ungutted up to and into the pickup bed.  A some oldtimers used to camp by us and we were always jealous of their luck getting bulls so close to the road they could hang em whole.  Finally found out they drag em out miles as needed - very slow but if you are 78 with a bad back you can still gettem out - just takes time.  They said they would just be sitting  around campfire so might as well spend the day pulling an elk out - the option is to not hunt at all.

We always gutted and hauled out meat on our backs, then we camped next to Idahoans and I had to ask why they always take em out whole,  it's for the bears, wolves and predators and not spooking the herd out of an area, so other guys in their camp can hunt the same spot.

That year we blew the elk and 3-4 bulls out of our hunting area by leaving a carcass, and didn't fill all the tags due to having to "find the herd again", but I bet had we yarded it out whole they would have stayed around.  Predators hadn't even hit the carcass yet, but the elk had moved on already despite us not having spooked a single cow when we shot the bull.
