i think im staying on the wetside this weekend and id like to try ratting. ive got a rattle bag. but i dunno the specifics of ratting. should it be short bursts or an ongoing batttle?
"Right now, I am thinking that If my grandmother was here, she would be lecturing me about how there are poor people in Africa, that would just love to have a Ruger, I would just say "Great, granny, lets just ship all the Rugers to Africa!"

short bursts IMO...maybe 30 seconds or so, wait 10-15 minutes, try again...throw in a grunt hear and there.
the bunk thing about a rattle bag is not being able to rake some brush with it. thrash some brush while you're at it. i like using the real thing personally.
have you ever seen footage of bucks sparring? you're just trying to recreate that noise.

short and sweet!  Buck fights are rapid.  Most successful rattles happen within the first 3 minutes.  I like real antlers not the bag.

i havent cut the antlers off of my skull from last year yet. what do you guys thinkg about the fake rattling antlers you can buy at sportsmans wherehouse and such

I usually grunt call two or three times.  wait a couple of minutes.  Then I'll slam then together and really make a racket for about 30 to 45 seconds.  Then get ready.  Keep an eye down wind as alot of bigger bucks will circle down wind first.  I love rattling and it works really well pre rut and after the peak of the rut.  Not so much during the peak but still worth a try.
