Sky/Sno steelhead?
« on: January 02, 2023, 05:55:27 PM »
Has anyone been having any success this season on either of these rivers? I have logged about 50hrs bankside since mid December between the two and have not had a bite. I don't mind putting time in but this has been ridiculous. I finally saw some plunkers with one on the bank today but for the most part it has been a ghost town for others I have spoken to. Escapement reports have been low so far but if there are going to be any keepers they should be around now. I have caught some cutties and small rainbows but no steel. Just curious what others are experiencing. Thanks.

I was out today and saw 1 fish on a stringer on the hatchery side at Reiter.  It was extremely windy (East wind too) so that shut down the bite completely.  I was there on Friday last week and didn't see a single fish.  The returns have been low overall, but there was a decent return last week.

I was expecting this week to be on fire - now I'm not feeling so sure.

Sorry for the threadjack, but does anybody know what's going on with the plants for these rivers?  I see all of the summer steelhead for the Skykomish were surplused with none spawned, and most of the winter fish have been transported to the Wallace hatchery?  What's going on there?  Also, I've heard rumors that summer chinook are being planted so they return to reiter.  Anybody have info on that?

Well you can look at the escarpment reports at WDFW home page. They do truck a fair amount Steelhead from Sunset falls to Wallace. It my belief that more effort will be put on Chinook but we already knew that.

My son and I floated from Big Eddy down to Gold Bar today and I hooked a toad but lost it after it straightened the hook on my jig. I caught a nice trout as well but nothing for my son. Any other reports?

I called it quits shortly after the new year, I reached the 60 bite less hour mark. Shoulda left it in '22. Escapement reports never really looked that great. Glad you had some action!

I've heard of only a few fish caught....really tough this year. But they only planted < 80k smolts which is down by 50% from 2017...
