Truck shuttle question.
« on: March 08, 2023, 06:07:02 AM »
For those of you that have vehicles with the fob/ keyless entry/ smart key system on the newer rigs what do you guys do for the truck shuttle guys? I just got a new vehicle with the keyless entry thing and am worried that if I put the fob in the normal hiding spot anyone can come up and push the button on the handle and steel the truck with the fob being within the range to start it… do you guys do anything special or trust no one will steal the vehicle. might be a basic question but I’m at a lose for this…

1) Read your owners manual to see just how it works.

2) Maybe have the shuttle service hide the FOB under a nearby rock/log or something. Have them text you a picture of the location. Or have them remove the battery if easily done.

My 2014 Ram is pretty tight with its FOB range. If the keys are on the truck bed by the gas cap it won't unlock. If I'm standing outside at the driver's door and reach in to start it won't. Gotta climb in or toss the keys in.

With a magnetic hide-a-key box tucked up in the rear bumper somewhere the truck shouldn't unlock or start. May depend on make/model/year though.

Any time I have used a shuttle I bring both FOBS.  I have the shuttle just lock the FOB in the truck and use my 2nd FOB once done with the float.

Thats fine with the old FOBs .... the new ones with the keyless ignition, not so much.

Crap....I have a 2020 Ram 2500 with just a push button.  I guess I got Lucky or it was never locked.  Either way I got some reading to do.

2021 Ford F 350. If my spare fob is in the console you cannot unlock the truck unless you have a fob outside the truck with you.
I have the keypad on the outside of the door to unlock the truck. Give shuttle person the combination to unlock the truck and and they can get the fob out of the console and start the truck.

If the shuttle has a location that isn’t too far out of the way you could have them lock it and hang on to the key. Then you can go pick up the key from them when you are done with your trip.

Have you ever seeen those folders your credit cards fit in to protect them?  Get ahold of a few, cut them apart to make a fully enclosed sleeve for your fob.  See if it will prevent the signal from getting to the truck's receiver.  Might be a quick cheap fix.

My wife's car has a RFID small safe when we travel. Last summer we went to Alaska on a cruise. Figured I had it all figured out, that's a no. The key and my travel weapon in the vault and anyone who grabbed the handle of the car and it unlocked. The weapon was still secure, but that doesn't do much good when the vehicle could be started. Had to have a person pick us up and drop us off.
there are enough door shakers in parking lots anymore just walking by pulling the handle.

Pretty sure the truck will not unlock with the passive entry unless the key fob is right there with you. Have you tried it?

I have a 2020 Ram 2500 and if I hide my fob under my back bumper the truck will not unlock when pushing the button. I tested it before leaving my fob while out hunting before

A mylar bag that is rilled up and pinned should block everything as would completely wrapping the fob in aluminum.
In archery we have something like the way of the superior man. When the archer misses the center of the target, he turns round and seeks for the cause of his failure in himself.

This.

You can buy a Faraday bag for it or wrap it in Al foil.

Read up sometime on how it is the FOB that constantly transmits it's code and how it can be fairy easily hacked and burned into a new FOB then presto your car is gone!  Crooks be doing this in parking lots.

Yes, the fob was in the vault in the back of the edge. I tried to driver's door and the car unlocked then it was nothing to sit in the seat and hit the start button and I could have drove off.
