Pillar mounting a rifle?

Anyone ever pillar mount a wooden rifle? in the process of thinking of doing a DIY but kind of was looking for some words of wisdom before i start.....was thinking of getting some aluminum 1inch length spacers and using those for the pillars. Do you think that would be enough?

i think hawkenbob had some made up for a savage rifle...maybe he would work you a deal on another set of handmade ones.

i guess i would also shoot it first to see how it shoots before you go through a bunch of steps that may not be necessary and may even make things worse.

No, it's not hard.

But I agree with Jackalope. Work up an accurate load to be sure theres an issue with how it shoots before you go to all that work. That said, Pillar and glass bedding an action, free floating the barrel, of an action in a wood or composite stock will seldom make it shoot worse. Most of the time there is an accuracy improvement.

Thanks Jackelope...your right i ment bedding....i have already talked to Hawkenbob, he is a busy guy...wanted to hear other opinions........

I was more or less just interested in peoples results of pillar bedding the rifles......DIY pillar bedding.....

Pillar bedding is easy to do.  And it is not just about accuracy, it also keeps you from over tightening your action screws and crushing your stock.  Would not hve a rifle that was not pillar bedded, personally.

You can create epoxy pillars that are just as strong as metal ones... and it's a lot easier than installing aluminum or steel. All you have to do is drill out the action screw holes about 3/8" oversize and use studs in place of the screws. Bed the floor plate and about half the action screw hole and let it set up for a day. Then go back and bed the action filling in the remainder of the void in the screw-holes also. When the expoxy has cured, you can open the action screw holes up slightly with a drill... and viola... epoxy pillars. I've done it several times with JB Weld and Marine-Tex... it works very well... and once set up the compression strenght on the expoxy is 3000lbs... don't think you can put that kind of pressure on the screws with an allen wrench.

JoshT and HuntBear are spot on with that info.  More going for Pillar and Action bedding than just accuracy gains. -Especially for a wood stock.
