I give them salt/trace minerals, much better for them.

My understanding is that the animals crave the salt when their feed has high amounts of water.  The nutrients get washed out of their system with the green feed and they need to replenish.  They tend to not crave the minerals as much when their feed dries out.

that and antler growth and lactation usually goes hand in hand as vegetation dries up and antler quit growing and does wean fawns the need for sodium drops
