Elk Heights Taneum Unit
« on: September 16, 2023, 06:11:44 AM »
Drew a cow tag for this area for MF season.  Never hunted this area before. I took a drive down some FS roads off of Taneum creek. Looks like alot of motorized trails around there. I can only imaging there will be tons of bikes and side by sides tooling around chasing elk away.

Any advice on hunting this unit trying to fill a cow tag? Thanks for helping if you can.

Big unit, should be able to find cows.  Lots of roads, but can get away from them.

I am pretty sure the trail riding/dirt biking ends on 10/15 annually but you will have plenty of trucks and sxs on the roads. I have hunted it for archery and ML and the dirt biking was seldom ever an issue.

Stay away from moonlight canyon Rd it is a washed out P.O.S. It’s pretty much a jeep trail anymore. There’s not much elk sign down low still good feed up high.

Thanks for the advice everyone. Good to hear the trail riding ends before the season starts. I've heard that unit can be a pumpkin patch come modern season. Hoping I can get away from the roads and motorized trails. I'm just not familiar enough with that unit. To know the best area for that.

Looks like the West end of the unit might be the best shot at it.

I would question that comment on when trial riding ends. Usually you need about 24" of snow at 6K before it ends!!  But the good news is that the animals don't care much about the riding. Ive watched many just go about 20 ft off trail as the bikes blast buy and then get right back on trails!  Good luck on your tag!

ORV trails in that area end when they get snowed in. The trails off Blewitt pass close Mid October for Hunting but as far as I am aware all the stuff South of I90 doesn't close for hunting.

It apparently is a reduction in what roads/trails remain open after 10/15. I know I have seen the signage in there pertaining to 10/15 closures. I don't ride dirt bikes so did not pay much attention.
