Help finding 10yr old a grouse
« on: September 30, 2023, 09:46:33 AM »
I am really trying to get my son his first kill. He is 10 and this is his first year with a hunting license. I used ro know a lot of area to go drive roads, but that was before Weyco went pay to play. I took him last weekend to try walking some gated roads in Larch Mountain area, got is a couple prime looking areas but never saw a bird. I am in Vancouver and I know some of the lower elevation areas around Larch and I know a little area round Green mountain area by Amboy.
But as he is not too used to long days of long hikes, I'd like to find a place or two to road hunt for them, just to get him hunting. Does anyone have somewhere they would be willing to share to get my son a bird or two? You don't have to worry about losing a spot to a ton of people or anything. Just want him to experience getting something before deer season.
Thank you much!!!

I've seen scads of grouse out past swift reservoir in years past but haven't been there yet this year. Usfs 25 is closed for a slide but I think you could get a pretty good ways up from that side and find old forest service roads to drive and walk. Its a bit of a drive for you but would make a fun day

Great hunting intro... early morning logging tracks, spot one, stop, jump out, load up, sneak up the road... My adultish kids still talk about it!
