Dad drew Grayback..
« on: June 12, 2009, 09:31:45 PM »
Well it is official, my dad drew a Grayback B.  Season will be November 11 to the 18th.  I have a general knowledge of the area but never hunted it myself and was wondering what he has to look forward to that time of year.  It will work perfectly for me to help him out because that is during elk season, in which i took off but will give me a good couple of days to hunt elk then focus on his tag.  I know that this is not the top tag in the state but i know that it has its fair share of nice deer.  We plan on scouting the hell out of it before the season even starts.  Don't need any specifics thrown out there, but a simple lead sent by PM would be great.  Thanks guys and happy hunted this next fall.

not to much need for scouting on this hunt. Most bucks are in totally different place for the rut. I think you will be able to get a great buck with out a doubt. Let me know if I can help you out I know the unit backwards and forwards.

:yeah: Lets just say you are more lucky than you will ever know. Lots of dinks to shoot. Just hold the gun for your dad and give it to him when you see one big enough.

Just remember that is a migratory/rut hunt.  This area can be void of bucks one day and the next day can have bucks running all over the place.  Grew up in this area and the herd isn't what it used to be even 6yrs ago. It should get better now that is has been changed to 3pt minimum.

Like bone stated think mass, there are still some brutes running around.  Should be a fun hunt.

My brother and I hunted it last year and spend 3 days pre-season scouting and then 3 days hunting. We definitely weren't overrun with bucks. Did see lots of does but not many bucks, not even "dinks." We did do well as I was able to kill a nice 23" 3x4 the first day and my brother got a 4x4 about 19 inches wide on the third afternoon. But these were the only two decent bucks we saw that weren't on private, posted land, in six days. So I'm just saying, it's no slam dunk. Well, maybe it would be for somebody who had hunted it for years, but this was our first time, other than a quick weekend hunt we did there 20 years ago during the general season.

Thanks everyone for writing posting.  Hey bone, i know it is a good unit and know it has its fair share of goods ones, i was just saying, like others have said, that it will not be a slam dunk like the Entiat or Desert.  I am really stoked and looking forward to what is to come.  I think i am more excited for my dad than he is for himself.
