Looking to Put a Moose trip together 2009

Well since I didnt drawout on anything except February Oryx this next year. Ive decided if I can get it all together that Im going to go on a moose hunt to Alaska. Ive got one phone call to put in up there and see if I can get an invite if that dont pan out I may be interested in one possibly 2 guys to go up with. Has anyone out there ever done a do it yourself trip or even a drop trip, if so maybe someone can help me get a jump start on this thing. Ive got 3 weeks of vacation to burn and I fiqure alaska is a great place to start. Anyone interested or have any helpful info as far as an area to start or a good reference. Thanks

3-4 days there, 3-4 days back, got 6-7 burnt on the trip already so your looking at a good 10 day hunt to be sure to account for bad weather etc... It is Alaska. Anyhow a DYI is the only way to go unless you got money burning a hole in your pocket. Don't know if you been there before or not, if so, I am talking to the choir, but if not AK is not anything like the lower forty eight, there is only a couple of roads to access areas, so everything must be by foot, boat or plane. Since the foot areas get pounded, unless you know where to go, your best bet would be a drop float or drop camp. Check out Pristine Adventures, yea he'll charge you a decent price for his information, but for someone that might not have all the connections contacting Larry Bartlett would be great source of information and he has that state figured out very well.. Plane ride we'll your looking at 2k or more depending upon how far you go... Plus rental for raft, Sat phone etc... The drive will probably take you for 1500 r/t Thats just for a DYI trip add a guide and jump to about 3-4k each for their expertise... Also, some Native don't take to kindly to the white man coming into their areas to shoot their Moose, so be careful where the trip is planned and get as much information as possible from guys off Pristine Adventure or ODD web site... If your planning for this year your way behind the power curve as most Outfitter and fly-out services have been booked since the beginning of the year, but with the economy the way it is, might find some great bargin, but bargins are risky.. I know Bone and Skyval have done the DYI from here so they probably have some great advice for sure. Good luck in your pursuit for the majestic Moose...

funny you shoud bring up this topic, because my cousin and I are in the planning stages of this very thing. We are planning a drop and float hunt for about 10 days of hunting, so prabably a 15 day total trip. We're going to drive up, with a big trailer with freezers in it so we can keep our meat and capes in good shape if we need to. We going to be doing our hunt on a tight budget, but it should be a lot of fun. Good luck with your planning.

Coho thanks for the info. I have been to Alaska 5 times but not on a hunt. I know I am behind the ball in planning a hunt this year, but hopefully its not to late we shall see what we can put together. Last option will be a POW trip for Sitkas and Black bear, I can definetly do that with the cabin we have up there. Anybody else with any ideas....

non residents need guides for grizz/brown bear, goat and dall sheep that is all
DIY for blackies, moose and caribou not an issue
if you are thinking of doing the hunt let me know I am interested was stationed there for 6 years I know some good areas and would not mind going back up there. Have two quads can get into a lot of areas up there also have a 13.9 foot zodiac for a fly in and float out.

We went last year. Was a lot of fun. Next time we will either do the fly/float thing or ship up some quads in my snowmobile trailer and rent a truck. We towed a jet sled up with canoes lashed to the top. We drove to Manley and put the boat in river. We didn't get the 70 incher I wanted, but we hiked some country that I don't think many folks even get to see, let alone but boot tracks on.
I don't know what it costs to take the ferry from Bellingham to Anchortown, but it was almost 2 grand round trip from Petersburg to Haines. One truck with boat/trailer, (38 ft total length...they charge vehicles by the foot), and three people with one stateroom, food etc., AND we lost a day and a half due to the ferry breaking down. Got to spend a whole day in Juneau though.
Are you planning on driving up or flying? Good luck!

My cousin and I are going for two weeks this September on a float hunt for moose. We started planning about 1 1/2 years ago. We will be dropped in by float plane, and have about 60 miles of river to float in about 11 days of hunting. The outfitter we went through only puts 4 hunters a year on this stretch of river and I know he is booked for 2009 on this river, but he does do some other areas. It is out of King Salmon, AK, so you can't drive there, if that is what you are looking for. This is not a low budget hunt, but not anywhere near the price of a guided hunt either. If you want any more info, PM me and I will see if I can help put you in touch with him. He is a fishing guide and a transporter for hunts.
