Ruger 10/22 feeding issue
« on: August 30, 2024, 10:16:10 AM »
I recently built a 10/22 using a Brownell BRN-22R receiver, a Kidd bolt/receiver pins/buffer and a Ruger trigger, the gun shoots my 10 round mags all day long with no issues but has never emptied any of my 3 25 round mags (Ruger BX-25) without a failure to feed. Do I keep throwing $$$ at 25 round mags hoping to find 1 that works or ________? Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You can't legally buy 25 rounders in Washington anymore so  :dunno: Are your mags ones with plastic lips or metal?

They're metal, not buying them in WA.

My 10-rd. mags feed more reliably than the 25-rd. mags.

I don’t have any problem with Ruger BX mags.  Maybe it’s an ammo issue?  In any event, they are irreplaceable under this state’s current laws, so it behooves you to figure out why they aren’t feeding properly and fix them.

I’d start with cleaning them, maybe deburring if needed.  Lube with a quality dry lube.  Use quality ammo.  They will work, you just need to find out why they aren’t feeding.  If all else fails, disassemble them and see what's going on inside.

I've tried numerous ammo brands, didn't matter. I did just watch a couple Youtube vids (should have done that first) sounds like I'm not the only one having feeding issues with the BX25's, now I've got a couple ideas to try.

I would spend some time sanding/polishing the feed ramp. I learned a lot about dyi gunsmithing on YOUTUBE, not sure you can find that much anymore

My 10/22 doesn't like the Ruger 25 round mags but cycles the clear cheapo Butler Creek mags all day long.

Sometimes if the fit is too loose between the receiver and the magazine, the magazine falls too far down away from the bolt due to the extra weight of the larger magazine and extra ammo. Next time you go and shoot, push the magazine upwards and hold it there while you shoot the gun. This is not a fix, but it does tell you if this is where the problem lies.

I've had problems with BX mags feeding my older Ruger 10/22.  I've had better luck with other brands.

Throw away the BX magazine and stay with the original 10 round magazine.
