Good digiscoping camera?

I am looking for a compact camera to carry in my pack that is capable of digiscoping.  I am looking at the Nikon Coolpix S710.  You guys that do this -- is this camera well suited for this?  I am not buying an adaptor -- just hold it up to the eyepiece.

without buying an adaptor you will get iffy pics at best. it's hard to hand hold zoomed way in anyway...then add in the magnification of the scope and it will be even more difficult. i tried to hand hold my camera through a swaro 80MM scope and couldn't barely make out what i was taking a picture of over the weekend.
what kind of scope? i've found a couple times i tried it that the size of the lense of the camera has to be about the same size as the eyepiece end of the scope for it to work even remotely well, then zoom the camera all the way in.

you can get a universal adaptor usually pretty inexpensive.

I have  a Swaro sts65....  Their adaptors are too expensive for how much I would use it.....  I'm not looking for frame quality pics, just ability to capture a pic now and then of animals .....  I read through the digiscoping threads and some guys said all they do is hold the camera to the eyepiece?

yeah i've tried that. it doesn't work too well and it's really hard to hold everything steady enough.

Hunt, if you look on backcountryhunting.net there is a thread at the top of the elk forum that has some pics of animals that are digiscoped just using your hands. They came out pretty good actually. I took a few handheld ones last year also but it is way better like jackelope said to get an adapter. I have one and its so much nicer.

I do fairly decent with a canon, and the pics on Backcountry were taken with a casio.

I am looking to upgrade though and I am going to try my buddies casio on my adapter and see if its better then my canon. Look forward to see what other guys are using.

are you using a swaro? i think those eyepieces are so big it makes it tough to use without an adapter with a little camera.
i did ok with my little point and shoot and my little burris.

Yea swaro. I actually took a few pics last year without the adapter just to save a little weight by leaving it behind and they turned out all right. Here is a handheld pic. The camera is a Canon SD 900 Digital Elph.
