Airline Travel Fishing Rod Case
« on: March 29, 2025, 06:12:20 PM »
Who uses what for rod case airline travel? Will be going this fall and packing river hardware, no fly rods, mostly bait caster rods throwing spoons. Yes, Google is my friend, but looking to see what works best when flying, what looks good in a picture does not always work good. Whatcha got?

Thanks

I have some plastic tubes that will only hold the rod(s), no reels. Reels would need to go in baggage. Too bad you are not closer, I would spiff them to you wanted them.
Cuterebra are NOT cute!

You can make a tube out of PVC pipe to fit your rods exactly pretty easily. Just put an end cap on one end and a threaded cap on the other.

When flying Alaska I've started putting my reels in my check bag and just walking on with my rods, there's a separate little storage compartment in the front of the plane the stewardess will usually stick them in if you ask nicely. If I was going to check them I'd build sch 40 pvc holders like Brushcrawler said

I have an old Plano telescopic travel tube that I used last fall when I flew to MN for my boundary waters trip. 3 reels stayed in my carry on backpack .  I contemplated making a shorter one out of pvc pipe but decided to save the $$ and use what I had. Worked like a champ.

This looks pretty much exactly like what I have.

Pvc tube works well, the only thing I added to mine was a little padding (soft foam) glued in the ends of the tube.

New surf rod just arrived and comes in a rigid fabric case that uses spring tension to keep sections secure. Just fits inside check bags. 5 piece rod so prolly too small for rods you may use.

Alaska Airlines used to let you check one piece of sporting equipment for free but they don't anymore.  Fishing rods could get pretty expensive if you don't have free bags somehow.  I've built several PVC tubes for Alaska, even the baggage handlers can't damage those.  I'm pretty sure you could drive the plane over them.

I mailed my rod tube back from Minnesota. Way cheaper than the bag fee. Plus it was easier to not have to deal with it in the airport.

I used this one when we flew to Mexico and it worked great.  Put my reels in my carry on with my tackle bag.
